Engelberg is a small community located in central Switzerland; the area hosts a population of just 3,500 people. Most popular for its winter activities, it is home to many rugged mountain bike trails many of which are better suited to hiking. Rich in historical culture; the Middle Ages saw the Benedictine monastery regarded as a leader in educational accomplishments; in the 19th century Engelberg became recognized as one of Switzerland's top resorts and spa areas.
The terrain in Engelberg is simply majestic. Well known for its cascading cliff bands and small crowds; this is an area where hardcore winter athletes come to get their fix. People come here to actually ride, not to be seen riding so it's a different mental state of shredding. It's not just the massive 3,200-meter peaks that bring the hardcore up to the 1,020-meter elevated town; a big part of the draw is the culture. When I think about Switzerland my mind drifts to the old country, the unique architecture, old churches, and wooden homes with decorative wooden trim. Vibrant flowers and Swiss style window shutters lie open on nearly every structure that's standing. Almost fantasy like, Engelberg breathes authenticity; a real Swiss experience.
This summer GT bicycles chose to host their 2008 product launch in Engelberg. Basically it's an ideal excuse for us Sanction - All Mountain
The Sanction is GT's all mountain machine with an emphasis on freeriding. GT says this bike was contrived by and for the people. They took to the Internet and researched what was in demand through chat forums and other sources. GT says that the people want a 30 lb. bike that can climb with ease and also shred a rowdy downhill. Personally, I think the Internet folks are dreaming but GT took the challenge anyway. What they came up with is a 34lbs, 6" travel bike that climbs with relative ease but also is capable of a bombing downhill. The 6.7lbs monocoque frame is spec'd with a well suited Rock Shox Lyrik fork and Fox DHX Air shock.
My personal view on the build might vary from others. The terrain I deal with on a daily basis demands stability and strength from a bike. What I need is wider bars, a shorter stem, heavier duty tires and believe it or not... more weight! I must be crazy, but truth be told when a light bike hits a rock at high speed you get tossed. I believe (as do many others) the Sanction would benefit with a little more freeride beef. I know these parts are easily replaced but if I'm buying a bike that says freeride, I want it to be freeriding straight out of the box. Of course, this all depends on your definition of freeride. Overall for the $3,199 price tag I must say this bike is still an excellent value.
Force - All Mountain/XC
The Force is similar to the Sanction, but this one is built more specific to the XC market and comes with a more affordable build. It replaces the I-Drive 5 and comes with just a little more squish in the rear via a Fox RP23 shock. It weighs 4lbs less than its big brother and is combined with a steeper 67degree head angle and complete XT build kit. The bike is well suited for the lighter-duty rider, yet still capable of dabbling in more varied terrain. Both the Sanction and the Force come with removable dropouts on both sides. The Sanction comes stock with a 12mm Rock Shox Maxle, the Force stock with a standard QR. The beauty of this is if you want more (or less) beef on your axles you can easily swap dropouts.
The proven Independent Drivetrain (GT's new wording for I-drive) once again provides effortless, bob-free, pedaling and eliminates chain growth. There has been some work done on the I-drive system and it promises to be much more service friendly. Both bikes take advantage of the current trend in frame design with arcing top tubes. GT's is actually two pieces welded together rather than one Hyrdoformed tube. Overall, the Force will be a force to be reckoned with if you're shopping for an all-round, do everything, type of bike.
Zaskar - XC
It's going to be the 20th anniversary of the Zaskar in 08 and to signify the achievement GT decided to do something extra special. The Zaskar is being re-released in a ball-burnished Alcoa 6061-T6 tubing, like the original. It comes modernized to accommodate a 100mm fork, a lower standover height and is equipped with disk mounts. The whole package comes wrapped in a special 20th anniversary box.
It doesn't stop there; on the opposite end of the Zaskar's spectrum, GT introduces the all carbon fiber version. This 2.64 lb. bike frame is pimped out! The Team version comes extra classy with a complete XTR groupo, Fox F100RL fork, Ritchey carbon bars and stem and decked out with a sexy black on black decal kit. You could easily show up to your wedding on this rig and no one would think twice; this bike is pure sex and cocktails. The Team version is well suited to serious XC race hounds. If you're on a carbon fiber bike budget try the Pro version, the only difference is XT instead of XTR. The Team will retail around the $4,000 mark.
