Carl Froch - At a Fork in the Road
Carl Froch is the type of boxer that Britain hasn't been famed for producing down the years. Not circling in a media hyperbole, he has quietly worked his way through the middleweight division, melding a combination of great conditioning and unquestionable heart with a rock solid, granite like chin. When he triumphed over Jean Pascal in a modern day classic encounter, he not only became a World champion but also an icon for the victory of substance over style.
His drive to be remembered as a great of the pugilistic world, and his willingness to travel and fight seasoned champions in their own backyards (until recent events, anyway) have only strengthened his reputation as a warrior, whilst his gutsy and dramatic last gasp knockout of Jermaine Taylor in Mashantuckets has also served this purpose. His undignified chasing of Joe Calzaghe aside, he has been a credit to British boxing.
Yet he now faces an interesting crossroads following his contentious defeat to Mikkel Kessler in Denmark during April of this year. Whilst there were enough close rounds to make Frochs post fight assertions of injustice more than mere fancy, it is also fair to conclude that given the hometown lean that is etched in boxing lore, Kessler just did enough to shade the contest. That debut loss, on the back of a courageous and ambitious decision to participate in the excellent ‘Super Six' concept, means his next fight against Arthur Abraham's (King Arthur, 31-1-0) is the biggest test in Frochs career to date.
Never subject to hero worship from the majority of the British public, (dually because of his flat footed, non fluid style and the aforementioned Calzaghe hunting baiting) he is perpetually fighting an uphill battle regardless of whether he is winning or losing. The tough, German based Abraham's would be a test in any circumstances; big, strong and blessed with fierce punching power and only 1 DQ loss on his CV. But with the ever-keen vultures in ill intended flight above The Cobra, and a score of boxings fans across the UK ready to holler ‘I told you so' from the greatest possible height, this is an ultimate test of his much-vaunted character.
Whilst this will surely stand up to the occasion, the question is whether Froch's skill can match is indomitable will. Though Abraham was out thought and out boxed by the sinuous motion and jab of Andre Dirrell prior to his disqualification in their own Super Six bout, Froch is certainly no dancer and will offer a more rigid target for his heavy-handed foe. And that Kessler defeat, an out of reach irritant at the back of his mind, could also play a part. Boxers react differently to a first professional defeat especially after a long, unbeaten career. Naseem Hamed, the once irrepressible Prince, quit a dispirited fighter after his ousting at the careworn hands of Marco Antonio Barrera, whilst a devastating, 1 round knock out defeat to Bredis Prescott seems to have been the making of our own Amir Khan. How Froch reacts, and just how good he really is, will be the decisive factors when he finally meets the German.
One can anticipate a gruelling 12 rounder, and 2 boxers' fates at the mercy of the judges once again. And sadly, Abraham celebrating the thinnest of split decisions
