How To Choose The Right Go Kart Frame

An essential piece of a fast and strong go cart is the chassis, also named the go kart frame. It requires a precisely-designed and solidly built chassis to keep your tires glued to the ground while maneuvering through congested tight corners at bullet speeds. Losing control is much more likely to occur with a second-rate chassis.

A go kart frame or chassis is manufactured from steel tubing, attaches to the axles, and is designed to hold the motor and body. Given that go carts do not have a suspension the framework must be solid enough not to break and flexible enough to act as the suspension. Sharp corners are a key part of go kart racing and can be very rough on frames, so some flexibility is essential for maneuvering although some stiffness is essential for stability.

The 4 Types of Go Kart Frame….

Straight, offset, open, and caged are the 4 frame types. A caged frame has a roll cage attached that encircles the driver of a kart. Its most important purpose is to prevent harm or injury during a mishap, principally in a roll-over accident, but as an added bonus it can also help reinforce the framework. A roll bar is commonly used instead of a roll cage. The roll bar is put immediately in back of the racer and provides a moderate amount of protection in a roll-over, but not as much as a roll cage. An open chassis has no roll cage and will not protect the racer as competently.

Straight and offset frames are named according to the position of the racer. If the racer sits in the middle of the go cart it is called a straight chassis. If the racer sits on the left side it is an offset frame. Straight frames are typically used for sprint racing while offset chassis are normally used for speedway racing. Speedway racing is normally the term given to oval tracks encompassing all left turns.

An Efficiently-Constructed Chassis Improves Durability and Efficiency….

Despite the type of frame used, a sturdy frame will offer you a sturdy kart that can endure the punishment it receives on brutal courses. Differing types of race tracks and conditions call for differing levels of frame stiffness for maximum effectiveness and durability. The level of stiffness will fluctuate depending on whether or not the road course is dirt, blacktop, or concrete.

A stiffer chassis is typically best in drier weather and track conditions and a flexible frame is best for soggy track situations. The best chassis allow for easily altering of the stiffness to ideally fit the current climate and road course conditions. You can adjust the stiffness if you have the ability to add or remove stiffening bars on the rear, front, and side of the vehicle. Better go carts offer this ability.

Exceedingly stiff frames, that are lacking enough flexibility, can break very easily. The right level of stiffness and flexibility will allow a racer to maintain a truer line during tough cornering instead of sliding sideways. This will usually enhance performance of the vehicle and also increase the lifespan of the chassis.
