It always pays to have a hobby. Not necessarily in monetary terms, but in gaining fulfillment and pleasure. So what's a good hobby to divert yourself from the hassles of work and living, or stress and boredom? You can try cycling - a healthy, fun and stimulating activity that kids and adults (alike) love!
But then again, not too many people realize the benefits of taking their two wheels at the park for a good ride. What they ought to know is that cycling does their body and mind a lot of good. Do you need to trim your waistline a bit? Boost your heart health and endurance? Or maybe you simply need an effective means of relieving stress and releasing tension? How about expanding your social circle and making new friends? Getting into the habit (or hobby) of cycling can give you these perks.
Now, this doesn't mean you'd have to spend much in getting yourself a bike. Even with a limited budget, you can own a road bike and be on your way to becoming a cycling enthusiast. After all, there are cheap road bikes available in different sizes, types and price range.
In choosing a bike, there are three things you primarily have to think about: the frame materials, the frame geometry and the bike's components.
When it comes to materials, there are road bikes made of steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. There are also models made of a combination of these materials.
Aluminum, being light yet sturdy, is the most common material. A lot of cheap road bikes are made of aluminum. Because aluminum is lightweight, the bike flexes less under load. The rider can then channel their energy into motion.
Steel on the other hand offers a smoother and more comfortable ride. Being more pliant, it absorbs road vibration, thus it has been used as material for both cheap and expensive road bikes for decades.
Carbon fiber is actually a cross of aluminum and steel, touting the best qualities of both. You could hardly find cheap road bikes made of carbon fiber. The priciest road bikes are however made of titanium, which is an extremely hard metal. A lot of handiwork goes with making a titanium road bike.
When it comes to frame geometry, it means the length of the bike's assembled frame tunes and angles. The bike's geometry determines the ride and how the bike handles. You can choose a bike with more acute frame angles, a shorter wheel base and less fork rake. That way, the bike handles light quick and responsive. Definitely ideal for racing.
Lastly, in choosing a bike, see to it that the components are machined to closer tolerances. A road bike's components contribute to the quality of the ride as well. Choosing a bike well, even if it is cheap, can mean better and longer use other than smooth and comfy rides. For leisure or as a sport, you're on the go, cycling to you're heart's desire (and health). Cheap road bikes mean better rides as long as you choose the right one.
