There are various teeth anomalies that can cause an otherwise attractive & pleasant face to start looking unattractive. We will try and discuss in a series of articles, the common complications & possible treatments with which your Cosmetic Dentist can work his/her magic, to help you achieve the benefits of a pleasant and attractive smile.
Spacing (Diastema) Between Teeth
Too large a jaw size, or unusually small teeth, can lead to conspicuous gaps between your teeth. In addition to spoiling your smile, these spaces can also lead to food particle accumulation which in turn leads to the decay of teeth & gums as well as a host of complex dental problems. Your Cosmetic Dentist can present you with various treatment options available in dentistry today, to help you avoid these serious dental problems. We will attempt to discuss here in brief the various treatment options available & their consequent merits and demerits.
1. Orthodontic Correction: In this case, a specialist dentist called an Orthodontist places brackets (braces) on your teeth using a wire that is tightened on a regular basis leading to a gradual closure of the gap between the teeth. There are various types of braces available, and your Orthodontist will be happy to discuss your options.
MERITS: Reducing the size of teeth through grinding is not required
DEMERITS:
- A long treatment plan. The duration may range from 1 to 1.5 years.
- After removal of the braces, you will also need to wear a retainer for another six months to a year.
- Brackets placed on your teeth can take some time getting used to, and may make eating food a little awkward & uncomfortable.
- Improper application of force through wire can lead to severe root & bone resorption of teeth.
- A gap between the teeth may again re-appear (relapse) if treatment is not continued for the required duration.
2. Ceramic Crowns: Crowns/Ceramic coverings are fabricated through computer aided design (CAD) technology in a high-quality dental lab using metal free and highly durable materials such as Zirconium/Cercon®. Your Cosmetic Dentist measures the exact size & positioning of the crown required in order to achieve full coverage of the gaps between your teeth and prepares an impression/mould that is sent to the dental prosthesis lab for fabrication.
MERITS:
- Relatively quick treatment usually completing over a period of 7-10 days
- Permanent effect
- Looks very natural
- Dentist can even enhance the shape of the tooth at the same time and can also give you a whiter set of teeth.
- The ceramic used for making the crowns, is an extremely inert material that has no reaction with the rest of the body unlike metal based Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) crowns
- Ceramic crowns normally carry a warranty between 5 to 10 years.
DEMERITS:
- Grinding of teeth is required. Up to 1.5 to 2 mm of the tooth base/surface is removed so as to accommodate the size of the crown so that it does not protrude, and looks in-line with the rest of your natural teeth.
- A Root Canal Treatment (RCT) may also be required before placing the ceramic crowns in case some infection is found in the teeth that are going to be worked upon. This helps increase the life of the crowns.
3. Ceramic Veneers/ Porcelain Laminates: Veneers are the most advanced solution available in dentistry today for treating Diastema. Just as with All Ceramic Crowns, Veneers are also made of ceramic, however unlike a full crown, they cover only the front and sides of the teeth. Only a trained, certified, and experienced Cosmetic dentist should be consulted for this type of advanced treatment.
MERITS:
- Most conservative form of treatment available for reducing gaps between teeth
- Least amount of grinding of teeth is required (just 0.5mm as opposed to All Ceramic Crowns 1.5mm to 2mm).
- Another advantage is that just the front of the tooth is grinded as opposed to all around grinding required before placing an All Ceramic Crown.
- Normally a painless procedure, so even a local anesthesia is usually not required while placing veneers
- Properly placed high quality Veneers can last for a very long time and normally come with a 5 year warranty
- The Cosmetic Dentist can also enhance the shade of the teeth making them permanently whiter
- No resorption of teeth occurs
- Fast treatment normally over in just 7 to 10 days
DEMERITS
- Only real demerit of this treatment option is the grinding of the front tooth surface to absorb the thickness of the ceramic laminate (0.5mm).
- Case selection is critical for the success of Veneers – severe malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), a traumatic bite, as well as night grinding of teeth can lead to the failure of Veneers.
4. Composite Cements: Dental composites are tooth colored dental cements used to change the shape/size of teeth. This is completely an in-office single-sitting procedure where the Cosmetic Dentist adds composite cement to match your teeth color and fill the gaps between them.
MERITS:
- Cheapest option amongst all
- Requires the least amount of time. Commonly done in a single sitting
DEMERITS:
- Inferior strength in comparison with Veneers or All-Ceramic Crowns
- Unlike Ceramic Crowns & Veneers, shade of the composite cement can be affected by food, drink, as well as smoking
- Requires intermittent polishing to remove stains
