Taking Pictures At Night
Capturing stills during day time, in broad sunlight, can be a way easier task than doing so at night. You may not be a professional photographer, but daytime photography is less challenging and you would often find that hues and shapes are captured successfully. However, night photographycan be very different- in terms of perspective, angling the camera, and using the right features and equipment when available, and when not, investing in them.
Depending on what precisely you intend to capture, you may or may not need to use a flashlight. Sometimes, you might want to focus attention to a particular part of the still, a part of the foreground, but which is very dark. In such a case, throwing light on that limited portion can work very well with your pictures. Night photographyhas unlimited scope for creativity and the point sources of light you can use as a tool to manipulate the image would range from a candle to a bike lamp! With taking photographs at night, there is an added advantage of long exposures. You could use some brilliant tricks during night time. Some of these include using water bodies to multiply light, sectioning out negative spaces and using high shutter speed for sharp images or blurring them by using a shutter speed of 10-30 seconds. You can use these tricks to create images that are partially blurred or layer-wise blurred.
Night photographycan be very interesting and you may not always need a tripod stand to click the best pictures. You must make sure you are always on the look for unique angles. Some cameras have a Long Exposure NR and it should be used. It helps in capturing a dark image and negates any background noise pixels. Also the viewfinder shutter should be covered up to prevent any light leakage through it. Using a wide angle lens can help you take some of the most interesting pictures. Now low light photography can be challenging, but it also leaves you great opportunity, as mentioned previously, to click innovatively.
Rays of light emerging from point sources are visible and can be nearly isolated during night time. Summing up what has been said earlier; high quality images can be obtained by using the following night photographytechniques: using a fast film, setting a higher value of ISO, using flashlights, spots or reflectors, using a fast lens and using a tripod.
On a more practical note, it may be a difficult task to explore certain areas during night time, particularly if you are an amateur. Visiting a photographically potential spot for night photographymight get you into trouble, or at times simply the weather may be bad. In such a case, going there may seem like a tempting idea but at the same time a bit risky. It is advisable not to venture out without planning as you may not only be breaking security rules sometimes but you also stand a chance of being stranded, or robbed and attacked.
