The Shifters
The look of the lever is similar to Campagnolo record, however without the small lever on the inside of the body. The little red logo on the back lever makes them stand out from the bunch.
The best facet of the levers, after the 'Double Tap' function would be the adjustable reach on the brake lever and gear lever to suit our hand size and the reach of our fingers. You first adjust the gear lever, and then the brake lever to our needs.
This great function all brake/lever shifters should actually be having. Plenty of carbon is involved to make the SRAM Red shifters 10% lighter than the Force shifters. There is also a choice of cable routing which is great if we own bars with a tight bend for the cabling at the back of the bars. However with the Red we can have the cables in the front.
The Crank Set
The carbon cranks are similar in looks to other competitive sets, except for the red logo that they carry. This set weighs a feather light 760 grams in full and the bottom bracket uses Black Box Ceramic bearings for a smooth, resistance free pedaling ride.
The cranks come in six different lengths, and three chain ring combinations; 53/39 and compact 50/36 and 50/34 are made out of 7075-T6 aluminum and alloy fixing bolts as per standards set by the SRAM red group.
The Derailleur's
The rear derailleur is very light in weight, and made out of carbon and titanium. However the precision with which this works is great. The pulleys are having ceramic bearings, while the cage is made of carbon, brining the weight down to just 153 grams; enabling this mechanism to take a maximum 28 tooth sprocket.
The front derailleur is having a hardened titanium cage fit onto the alloy body, and is now having more of adjustability due to the fine tune onto the left lever.
The Cassette
This sprocket cassette is a wonderful piece of engineering for the SRAM red. It is light, stiff and very hard, and has everything that we would ever want. It is machined out of a solid block of chromo-steel which has been heat treated and then shaped using CNC techniques.
When we see one it is like any other cassette, but appearing red inside. Weighing just about 160 grams, this piece of engineering will take you miles.
The Chain
Chains manufactured by SRAM have always been amongst the best. They have that 'Power Lock' connecting link which is secure and so much easier than any other system. The pins are hollow for saving on weight, but strong and one of the best.
The Brakes
The way these look can be misleading. They are skeletonized but work brilliantly. Use them to really find out what they are worth. They would never disappoint.
The Ride
This is the best part where SRAM red group scores over the others reducing the gap. The find is going to take the riders through unseen heights. So, check them out, and give them a try.
